A Summary of Week 4

I had a lot of fun this week with the different assignments that I chose. Photography is something that I have always enjoyed, but have not spent a lot of time working on. It was nice to improve my skills doing something that I have been wanting to focus on more.

I started off the week by reading “Becoming a Better Photographer” and “Photography and Narrative.” I thought that both articles set me up really well for the assignments that I had to complete throughout the week. I wrote a photo reflection post that evaluated my different experiences with photography and made me think about the different things I wanted to learn and accomplish.

Using the concepts from those same articles, I wrote a post where I identified some of the different points that they talked about and considered how they changed their storytelling impact.

I also completed a photoblitz, where I had 20 minutes to take 7 different photos that I was given prompts for. It was a fun way to get a little out of my comfort zone and have a new photography experience.

I completed 5 different visual assignments this week. The first assignment I completed had me take a picture every 10 steps and make a collage out of them. For the second assignment I compiled some pictures of places where I feel peaceful and relaxed and made a collage out of them. The third assignment had me create a mashup of three different secret agents. I got to use the character I created last week for the fourth assignment. For the fifth assignment, I shared and talked about my favorite photo I’ve ever taken.

Two out of three of the daily creates this week had me draw sketches, which isn’t something I’m entirely comfortable with. But just like in previous weeks, I was grateful for the push to step out of my comfort zone!

In response to the questions of the week, I was inspired by all the people in the class who are stepping out of their comfort zone and being creative! It’s so interesting to see all the different ways that people will complete the same assignment. I also really appreciate everyone getting into the theme. It’s definitely a fun class thing that would be weird if you were the only one doing it.

This week I tried to go above and beyond what was required of me for the assignments. I know that it easy to fall into the trap of doing the bare minimum for the assignments, but I think you get a lot more out of them if you really put in the work. I know that for me personally, I like being able to look back on the work that I have completed and feel proud. Hopefully others in the class will see the effort that I am putting toward my assignments and be inspired to continue doing their best work as well.

This week was a really enjoyable one for me. I love that the week we focused on photography lined up perfectly with the gorgeous weather outside! It was nice to be able to complete some of my assignments in the fresh air. I have also enjoyed reading other people’s blogs on a regular basis and keeping up with them throughout the weeks. This class feels a lot different than other online classes I’ve taken, which I really appreciate. It was fun to see other people’s pictures from around campus. I am really looking forward to next week and all of the new things I will continue to learn!

Third Week’s a Charm

I started this week confidently, feeling like I was finally getting into the swing of the class. I knew how to plan my time, schedule my assignments, and finish all the work according to schedule. On Saturday, I started working on the assignments, which was earlier than I had begun the other weeks. Sadly though, life doesn’t always go the way you want it, and I got sick part way through the week. Let me tell you, creative writing gets a lot harder when you have a fever!

Aside from all that, this week was really great! It was fun to be able to immerse myself in the theme and get invested in the character that I created. I also enjoyed reading/commenting on other people’s work this week, along with receiving comments on my own. It’s nice to know that other people appreciate the work that I am doing, and some of the comments were also helpful.

The daily creates were easier this week since I’ve gotten into the flow of doing them. I’m interested to see how I progress on these through the rest of the semester. It will be fun to look back on all of the work that I have consistently done and see how my creativity and skills have grown.

I read the chapter “Storytelling for the 21st Century” and watched Vonnegut on The Shapes of Stories, preparing myself to evaluate a movie that fit with our theme based on the storytelling techniques discussed. I chose the movie “A Shot in the Dark”, and summarized all of my work in this post.

I was a little hesitant as a began to work on my character dossier, because I didn’t really have any ideas. I shouldn’t have worried though, because once I started working on it, everything seemed to come together. You can learn more about my character here.

The assignments this week were a little different, since they were all from the same category. I enjoyed going through all of the assignments and finding ones that I was interested in and added up to 10 stars. The first assignment I did was pretty simple, but allowed me to think further about which story I wanted to analyze and who I wanted my character to be. The second assignment made me reflect on my childhood… I even had my mom dig up an old picture to send me for the post! The third assignment had me think back to freshman move-in day, which was interesting. The fourth assignment made me a little emotional as a tried to summarize some of the things I wanted to say to my mom.

Another thing I did this week was respond to the questions of the week on slack. I thought the prompts were interesting, and it was fun to hear about other people’s takes on them.

This week felt more involved than others. I liked being more immersed in the theme and starting to experiment more with my storytelling abilities. I also began to recognize certain people in the class this week and the work they put out. It’s nice that even though this is an online class, I feel connected with the other students. I look forward to getting to know people even better as we move forward.

Week Two in Review

When I first looked at the schedule for this week, I have to admit that I was a little nervous. It looked like a lot more work than last week, and I wasn’t too sure how I felt about the assignment bank. Reading this post about how to write up assignments didn’t make me feel much better, because it seemed pretty complicated. However, when I looked at the assignment bank I was pleasantly surprised. A lot of the assignments were actually very interesting, and definitely were not the type of assignments I was expecting.

I was also a bit nervous about doing four of the daily creates, especially since I forgot to do any of them last weekend! A few of the daily creates this week were a little out of my comfort zone but I was happy to be trying new things.

One of my favorite daily creates. I love both MLK quotes and volunteering!
I haven’t made any memes before, so this was a new experience for me.
This was TOTALLY out of my comfort zone. I rarely ever experiment with drawing, and am not good at it, but this was still fun to make.
I liked this daily create. This is one of my favorite pictures that I’ve taken.

This week I was surprised by the wide variety of assignment bank options available, and I am looking forward to completing more of them throughout the year. The first assignment that I completed both reminded me of my childhood and fit with our secret agent theme. I thought that the second assignment was interesting enough that I had a few of my friends try it! The third assignment was a little more complicated than the other two, but I was still happy with the finished product.

I also spend a lot of time working on improving the look of my blog this week, and trying to make it easier to use. I also made some future plans to continue to improve it in the next few weeks.

This week, I tried to be more engaged with the other people in this course. I made a point to check the ds106 flow every day and keep myself updated on what other people were working on. I found other people’s posts very interesting, and will continue to check the flow regularly. I also searched for the #ds106 tag on Instagram and followed quite a few other people in this class.

Just a few of the people I found and followed this week.

I followed the hashtag #ds106 on both Instagram and Twitter, which made it easier to find the work of other students in the class.

One of the other things I did was respond to the question of the week on Slack. This was one of my least favorite things, because I don’t know a lot about the secret agent genre, which made it hard to find an example to use.

I found something to talk about, even though it was a little unusual.

In summary, this week was challenging but fun. I am looking forward to all of the other things I will get to experiment with through this class. I think that I will have a lot of fun trying new things, although I am still a little concerned about the workload. However, I am sure that I will be able to face the different challenges in this class as I get to them! I look forward to continuing to improve my skills and get to know the other students in the class.

Week One Summary

I didn’t have many expectations coming into this class, so it’s ironic that this first week was not what I expected. It was definitely a little overwhelming to look over the assignments for the first week, especially since I had to create all of my social media accounts from nothing. I haven’t done anything like this before, so it was fun to experiment, but also confusing at times.

One of the first things I did was create all of my social media accounts and introduce myself on each of them. Here is my introductory blog post, and below are my other introductions.

After I installed my domain, the hardest thing was trying out how to orient WordPress. The other accounts were pretty easy to set up and introduce myself on, since I had already used most of them.

After the introductions, I wrote about our theme in this blog post. As I mention in the post, I am looking forward to experimenting with this theme as a class.

I also tried a few of the daily creates this week even though they weren’t required. I figured it was good practice!

My plant ended up dying btw

This week was more work than I was expecting, and challenging at times, but I am really looking forward to this class and all of the things I will continue to learn and experiment with.
